CHANGING LIVES, CHANGING COMMUNITIES

YWCA WORLD COUNCIL
KENYA, 1-11TH JULY, 2007

1,600 women from over 122 countries will gathered in Nairobi, Kenya in July 2007 for a unique experience. YWCA World Council is held every four years to set the priorities for the next session’s work, elect the members of the Executive Committee, and set policy through resolutions and recommendations.

This year’s highlights included a Young Women’s Leadership Forum bringing together young women from diverse cultures and backgrounds to explore issues of global concern including poverty, violence, human rights and sexual health. The International Women’s Summit on Women’s Leadership and HIV and AIDS starts with a one day Positive Women’s Forum, an event exclusively for HIV positive women.

Kirsty Kelly, YWCA Scotland President was elected to serve on the World YWCA Board for the next 4 years.

Lochend Centre Manager Sarah Cross visited YWCA Malawi on a 3-day pre-council African Partnership Safari to gain first hand knowledge of life for young women in Africa. She visited branches in Namiyango, Mulanje and Chapananga to see first hand their work on HIV/Aids awareness, social justice and human rights issues affecting girls and women.

YWCA Scotland were represented at World Council 2007 by Kirsty Kelly (President), Yasmin Shah (Vice President), Clare Booth (Board member), Caroline Spence (YWCA Roundabout) and staff members Sarah Cross (YWCA Lochend) and Gill Martin (YWCA Scotland C.E.O) as part of the YWCA of Great Britain delegation. YWCA Scotland member Julie Dickson attended in her capacity as Vice President of World YWCA.

You can read about their experiences in their daily blogs below

The delegation are now putting together a report on the World Council and preparing a presentation to disseminate their information to local centres. If you are interested in hearing about the outcomes of World Council or their experiences please contact Joan Bree for further information
