Tricia's Story
I’m Tricia and I’m from Portobello in Edinburgh. As
a young woman with strong political views and passionate beliefs,
I’ve been really lucky to be part of YWCA Scotland, becoming
an active member of the organisation and with it of society.
I was introduced to YWCA Scotland by the 104 Pairs of Shoes Exhibition.
This powerful method of raising awareness of violence against women
made a big impact on me and inspired me to make a difference and
take part in the work. Along with the coordinator and other volunteers,
we worked out strategies, designs and plans of how to raise awareness
of this continuing waste of human life. Following my work at the
exhibition, I was asked if I’d like to join a group of other
volunteers from across the country to represent YWCA Scotland at
the World Council meeting in Brisbane in September 2003. Of course
I said yes! This was the experience of a lifetime - hard work, but
definitely worth it.
We took responsibility for fundraising by holding events, applying
for grants and sponsorship. We also had to learn how to work as
a team, and together developed a workshop and questionnaire exploring
young women’s views on Body Image. I was amazed at what a
global issue this topic is and with it, how the issues young women
in Scotland face are common to young women across the world.
This motivated me to become more involved when I got home. I am
now a member of the Board of Directors and continue to raise awareness
of our key campaign topics by leading workshops and representing
YWCA Scotland at the Scottish Youth Parliament. With the knowledge,
experience and understanding of young woman's needs and concerns
that my personal experience and understanding by my participation
with the Y has provided me, I do my best to ensure that they are
recognised, acknowledged and addressed. This co-operation and support
will ensure that young women are given every opportunity to access
opportunities and drive change for our future.
