College Credit for YWCA Activities
YWCA Scotland is co-ordinating a pilot project to provide accreditation through the National Open College Network (NOCN) for service-users who take part in informal learning activities in YWCA. The project is based on achievements of the Platform 51 (formerly YWCA England & Wales) Learning and Accreditation project.
The project will mainly benefit those who have had little or no education after age 16 and those who may have had negative experiences of formal learning in the past. The project aims to build participants’ confidence and skills through doing something they enjoy and encouraging them to move on to further learning opportunities.
Members of the YWCA Scotland, YWCA Glasgow and YWCA Glenrothes teams have undertaken training to enable them to ensure activities they already successfully use to benefit service-users match the outcomes required for accreditation. They will then deliver the activities and present evidence of learning for external verification. About 50 young women and homeless young people will benefit from the pilot phase of the project.
We will monitor the outcomes of the project closely and if successful, will explore options for YWCA groups in Scotland to work together to seek funds to develop and extend the project.
