Lisa's Story
What YWCA Scotland Has Meant to Me Over the Past Year
When I started coming along to YWCA Kirkcaldy I had not long had my son. I was living with my parents and everything was a bit up in the air for me. I was feeling really down and unsure of where my life was heading and what I wanted to do.
It had been a while since I’d done any sort of learning at all prior to attending the courses. It was so nice to meet other mums and get to know them all. It was also the first time I had ever left my son alone with anyone that I didn’t know. After a long time of working in childcare I was apprehensive of leaving him in the crèche, however I was happy with the staff and the care he was receiving, and became confident to leave him there. We both felt better and it was great for him to be mixing socially with other children without me.
For me, it was so nice to learn new skills and the sense of accomplishment I felt when I completed the courses in Food Hygiene and Counselling. As I’m dyslexic I was a little unsure at first but I really enjoyed it. I now feel more confident and settled - I can do different things for me without just being mum! I realised that there are so many opportunities to do more with my life. It is so nice to meet and get to know other people coming along to the YWCA.
I now feel that my life is falling into place and I am happy. YWCA has been a great place and provided me with great opportunities. I had a lot of uncertainty in my life and YWCA has become somewhere that I can come along to and enjoy myself each week. I am now hoping to come along to the ‘Bairns n Blethers’ group, and I would also be very interested in volunteering at the Breakfast Clubs.
