What is the 16 days of Activism?
16 Days of activism campaign is an international campaign. In 1991, individuals and groups from all over the world started organising activities during the 16 days of activism against violence against women to raise public awareness about all forms of violence against women in their communities.
This international campaign which sprang from the first Women's Institute for Global Leadership, links violence against women and human rights, emphasising that all forms of violence, regardless of the place it appears, public or private life, is a violation of human rights.
The campaign seeks to:
- Raise public awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at local, national and international levels
- strengthen local work around violence against women
- establish a clear link between local and international work to end violence against women
- provide a forum for organisers to develop and share new and effective strategies
- demonstrate the solidarity of women around the world organising against violence against women
- pressure governments to implement promises made to eliminate violence against women
The Campaign runs from 25th November - 10th December, these dates include:
- 25th of November - International Day of Activism Against Violence Against Women.
- 1st of December - World AIDS Day - this year's theme is Women and HIV/AIDs.
- 6th of December - The Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.
- 10th of December - International Human Rights Day.
